6.5 rustys this weekend! couple questions.
hey guys im new here i just bought a cherokee a month ago and the first thing i did was lift it! but.... the tuff country 3.5 just doesn't give what i want. i need ground clearance! so this wekend im putting on my new rustys 6.5 long arm kit and 33s! but i do have a few concerns... occasionally i have to drive 75 miles to get to work and i was wondering how this will run on the freeway? and what the gas mileage will be like? im getting around 15mpg on my 31s but i have no idea what my gear ratio is or how to find that out. its a 1999 classic so im guessing its either 4:56 or 4:10? it has the chrysler rear end. any information would help! thanks!

gas mileage wont be good. you may want to regear w/ 33's. did you put in an sye with your 3.5" kit? there was a thread about figuring out gear ratios, just do a search. i highly doubt you have 4.56 gears in your jeep from the factory, i dont know if they ever did that in XJ's. probly not even 4.10's, might be 3.55.

i did not put in a sye kit but its coming with the new lift. i was looking on wikipedia about jeeps, it said 3:55 only came with a manual tranny? i dont know how accurate that article is though.

there should be a tag on your diff cover that tells you your gears. but search the forum about it, someone just recently explained how to do it by jacking up the vehicle and seeing how many rotations you get on the ds vs how many rotations the tire gets or somethin.

I would regear, and I would pick between 4.10's and 4.56's. 4.10's will give you better gas mileage, and 4.56's will give you a little more power. If you plan on getting bigger tires down the road I would go with 4.56's. Here are a couple pages that might help you decide.
Regear Ratio 1
Regear Ratio 2
Also, make sure your speedo gear is the correct one for your final gear ratio and tire size so that it will display the most accurate MPH readings.

You have also said the kit comes with a SYE so you have that covered. To make it daily drivable little things such as steering might need to be taken into consideration, but every Jeep is different. The higher your go and the bigger tires you run, the faster parts will wear out and the more upgrades you will have to make. Just keep that in mind as you go through this process.

okay i got it figured out. they do have 3:55's. so im probably going to take it in sometime in the near future to get 4:10's. but does anyone have an idea about gas mileage until then with 3:55's?
