I need some help. My sons '96 XJ keeps blowing the 5 amp fuse for the dash lights. But I replace it and it may last a week or two before it blows again. It blew last night. I replaced it and they are working. I have wiggled wires trying to see if it blows again, but no go. I really don't want to pull the whole dash out and check every wire on the lighting circuit. Any one experience this? Any known problem with the XJ's in this area?? Any help will be greatly appreciated........

 

Fuses will blow for two reasons. A short circuit will cause an immediate fuse failure. A higher than normal amp draw will cause the fuse to heat up over time and then fail.

Some people are tempeted to simply added a higher rated fuse. This is nothing short of foolhardy and can lead to melted wiring or an electrical fire.

If you have an amp meter, check the amp draw through the dimmer portion of the light switch.

Let us know what you find. Corrosion can increase the current draw so cleaning all connections including the bulbs themselves may help. That would mean removing the dash cluster which I know you didn't want to hear.
