Default 4x4 Working?

1999 Cherokee. This is my first time using my 4 wheel drive and I am wondering if is working, how do I check?

I used to have a 1981 Toyota 4x4 and when in 4 wheel drive it was obvious but with the Cherokee I am not so sure.

I should add I am using full time 4 wheel drive which brings me to another question, when to use full time and when to use part time?

You should be able to tell you are in 4wd when you are on flat ground turning. It will feel like it is catching... because it is.

Turning, but Don't do it on dry pavement though

Full time is kinda useless...maybe good for northern winter driving. Offroading, stay with 4hi and lo. Full time only transfers some energy to the front wheels.

I am on surface streets driving on snow and ice, full time 4x4 is the correct one to use or would I be better off using part time.

Speeds are 20-30 mph.

You should be using full time in that situation. Part/Low on non pavement roads
