On my 90 you have to be in neutral(transmission) to shift the transfer case...try it... Not sure about your year though.

X2 on neutral and the transmission has to be in neutral to shift back into 2wd also. As far as I know all/most jeeps are shift on the fly tcases which means you can be rolling (0 to 3MPH) and put the transmisson in N throw the tcase into 4wd and put the trans back into D and keep going. If it growls at you your going to fast

Actually it's at any speed. I've done it at 80 MPH+ numerous times. I had 13 4WD Comanches as demos when I worked for the dealer.

Let off the gas, move lever, tap the gas and let off at any speed in a straight line. Same for either 2 to 4 or 4 to 2, except obviously 4 low which requires engaging 4 high, stopping, putting the clutch in or auto trans into N and then shifting into 4 low.
