Default 4x4 problem Please Help!

Ok, so my friend has a 96 cherokee and has a 4 wheel drive issue. When he shifts it in 4 wheel drive the jeep just acts like its in neutral and revs when the gas is applied. Any thoughts anyone? we are going to tear into it this weekend and im just trying to figure out whats wrong.

Yea^, waz just wondering..if it was in "full time", and had no front drive shaft I suppose it should do that. Should still go in part time though.

I doubt he has the 231 "command track", the 242 "select track" with "full time" might do that with no driveline.

ok guys, hes got a 231 in the jeep. his old tcase grenaded after his drive shaft broke while driving, he put a different one in it and ever since he installed it the 4 wheel drive hasnt worked. we took it apart and the chain seemed loose, also when we shift it into 4H we spin the shaft that goes into the tranny and it wont grab the gears. sorry this is hard to explain haha.. its like the shaft the goes into the tranny isnt in all the way? so when they put the new tcase in, could they have installed something wrong?
