Default 4wheel making grinding noise

i just bought a 95 cherokee and took it into the dirt today, when i put it into 4wheel and started to drive it sounded like gears grinding together. does anyone know what that might be. it seemed like the 4wheel was working but just making a horrible noise.

check all your u-joints up front, the ds u-joints, and the two axleshafts u-joints there should be no play. also, you can pop off your diff cover and move the wheels and inspect whats going on inside there
