Default 4WD Problem?

I have a '96 XJ and when I put it into 4h I get a grinding noise, possibly from the transfer case. Sometimes it does not do this and it works just fine. I never have this problem going to 4l. When the 4h does work, every now and then when I slow down or coast and then accelerate I will get the grinding noise and have to shift out of gear right away. I had the chain replace last winter and had my transfer case worked on a couple of times by my dealers mechanic. They can never seem to find anything wrong. Any ideas? One of my older friends with an xj said something about the linkage might not be set correctly?

Thanks for any opinions in advance.

(I tried finding similar problems previously posted by others but didn't find anything just like mine, so sorry if this is a repost kinda).

I'm voting on the linkage...

X 2 in the linkage, bro. If your going into 4LO just fine but periodically grinding into 4HI. I'd say a little adjustment of the linkage to make sure those gears are meshing all the way everytime will fix your 4HI issue.

I recently went to a 231 from a '99, reason was that the output bearing in mine moved forward and was making other parts start rubbing together on the inside of the case. I looked into it for a fix which lasted for about two months before giving out again so I looked to the newer case design. I only needed the newer rear driveshaft to make it work properly. Everything else just bolts right up. I am convinced that it is a superior design to the older as I have pushed it a lot more than I ever have before on rougher terrain and it still shows no sign of weakness.

hey, I'm having the exact same problem. OmikronQ3 did you ever figure out what was wrong? was it the linkage?
Thanks,
Dan
