Default 4wd problem

Hey guys,

We just had our first major snow today. This was also my first time using the 4wd on the Jeep since I have bought it.....

And of course, something just doesn't sound right in the case. The gears sound very "audible" if that makes any sense. I've stopped using 4wd for now, and will be able to crack open my case this weekend. Over the summer, I noticed some oil pooling at the bottom of the t-case, so Im hoping I just have a small leak somewhere that is leaving me with low t-case oil. Any other guesses as to what my problem is?

I know it's a vague question, but its all the info I have to go on now.

Other than what I described above, it slips in and out of 4wd just fine.

What sort of issues cause this type of problem?

Thanks!

is this in 4h or 4lo? in 4low gear whine is normal, healthy and expected due to how planetary gear reduction works. Every Jeep I've ever been in has some kind of whine in 4lo

This is in 4hi. If I were to guess, it sounds like the gears are dry. They are not grinding, but they are not quiet either. The power train feels smooth when the 4wd is engaged, but this is my 3rd Jeep, so I know the sound is not "normal"

Does anyone else have any experience with low fluid levels in their T-Case?

First course of action would be to definitely check your t-case oil.
