4wd pops out in a few inches of snow

4wd pops out in a few inches of snow
I have a 1989 cherokee np 231 and when I have it in 4wd high going through somewhat deep snow (5+ inches) it will pop out into 2wd, I can use 4wd in light snow and it works fine, I have pulled a few people out of ditches so far. Any ideas?
