Ok so I got this 90 cherokee for $500 bucks and it seems like a fairly solid out fit. I am trying to understand the 4wd in it though, when i turn in 4wd I can definitely fell the churping of the tires and if i floor it on dry pavement it doesnt break em loose like it would if i were in 2 but i am still able to power brake. Is this normal? some kind of limited slip deal? I know that the rear end does not have a locker(hope to someday) but I know everything else ive ever driven if its in four its going. Also if i take it out of four it starts making this real light grinding noise as im driving like when ur trying to get a manual to go into gear and it progressively get louder till i slow down and it makes this pop noise and u can feel it. not real sure what all this means but hopefully some of you jeep wiseman can help me out.
I hope youre not doing this with the "command track"
What you have mentioned in your post will kill it quick.
If it is the NP231 DO NOT use it on pavement.
You are torque loading the TC, this can cause gears to give out, you can split the case, and a bunch of other stuff.
That grinding noise youre hearing is the TC trying to go back to 2wd but there is no wheels slip allowed on the pavement, therefore there is too much load inside the TC and on the gears, not allowing it to disengage. That POP you hear is not a good noise..
Theres a reason it says "for use on slippery or loose surfaces only" under the visor.

That black area under the clock has no lights in it, the clock takes up that whole back area.

The bulb in the back is pry burnt out, Mine was and I had about the same problem. You have to tear the dash apart and put a new bulb in.
You should have:
Part time
"Emiss Maint" (supposed to come on at 85,000mi as a reminder to check equipment)
Brake
ABS (If equipped)
Shift light (If its a manual)
No CEL, since its a renix

well im currently gettin the part time light but I have no idea why it comes on. Is there really traction control in a vehicle this old? If so how does it work and if it not working correctly is there a simple sensor or something that needs to be changed in order for it to function properly? How should I know if i have abs? I know it skids to a stop but could this just mean its mal functioning?
There is no traction control
the part time light is for the 4wd, so I have no idea why its coming on in 2wd mode.
If you have ABS there will be a pump under the hood, Im trying to find a pic for you.
