If your mechanically inclined its not that hard to do... its wether you can make it worth your effort financially to do.

You will need to find one the same year as yours preferably for the transmission and transfer case. Transmission models changed on some years.
Yes you could use another years transfer case but the input splines count and length could be different so a matched set is better.

The front diff out of any XJ 98 back will work, gear ratio needs to match your rear (probably 3.55).... 99 up had low pinion front differentials and are less desirable than the older high pinion D30.
You will keep your existing rear differential.....

Front and rear driveshaft need to come from donor vehicle.

You will need transfer case shifter linkage and shifter, bezel etc.

Its all basic bolt in stuff... hardest thing is swapping transmission.
Friend of mine did his daily driver with only one day off a week to have it down.....
4wd front diff can be put in one weekend and then be driven...
Trans and transfer case put in the next weekend in a day, leave TC in 2hi and drive it...
Next weekend he installed the linkage for the transfer case shifter and was done...
That was on a 91 model so it should be the same as yours.

Unless you have a pullapart nearby a regular JY would want at least $1000 for all the needed parts....... Pullapart should be under $500 for all.
id watch the classifieds and online for a complete donor 4wd buy it and swap the parts over...... I see them all the time wrecked or with blown motors for under $400. Then again if I found one with a blown motor id pull the 2wd motor and put in it.

You can find 4wd XJs running for $1000......
