Default 4wd

Hey everyone,

New to the forum . I have a 2001 xj sport just recently went over 100,000 miles. Going to be doing some fixes soon so id like any info and input from the rest of you. Drives fine no major problems no offroading but it makes a clunking sound sometimes while turning when in 4wd. It doesn't do this any other time. Also have a small oil leak, more of a drip I guess. Its been like that since I had it. Should I leave it or get it fixed. Not really concerned too much about the slow oil drip. I use 4wd in snow. Thanks too everyone.

the clunk could be a bad u joint, or ball joint, something simple. another issue depends on if you have an NP231, or NP242 transfer case. the 231 have only part time meaning that you should only use it if all 4 wheels can spin freely. the 242 has a part, and full time option. the full time allows you to turn lock to lock without any binding or wheel hop. so unless yours has the 242 and your running it in full, there will be some unpleasantness when you turn. the advantage of the 231 is it is more rugged..

If you have no full time option, do not use the 4x4 on the road. Will ruin the drive train and tires.

Also, if you have a small leak, try a heavier oil like 10w-40 to see if that stops the leak. I had a small leak somewhere (Im sure still do) but it no longer drips on my drive way with 10w-40.

Hey guys,

I have the 231 . Its only available in part time. I only use this a handful of times a year
during snow since im in delaware. I will try the oil suggestion. Like u, I only have small spots I notice on driveway. Thanks to the both of u for ur help. I plan on keeping this thing as long as possible. Im running bfg all terrains on it w/ black american racing rims and it looks so much better than the stock set. Also have a roof rack with spare on it. Looking to get some bushwacker flares but haven't found any that fit the 2001 xj. Am I wrong on this? Let me know if u have any ideas. I removed the rear stock flares due to some slight rubbing.
