4wd to 2wd issue.

4wd to 2wd issue.
I just got myself a 87 xj (my first) and I'm having a bit of an issue with switching from 4wd to 2wd.
The issue is that when i want to come off 4wd to 2wd, the lever with not not move into the 2wd position. I have tried the rolling style to switch from 4wd to 2wd. I also tried putting the xj in "N" and try moving the lever to 2wd with no luck. I dont know what else to try.
Need some help.
