Front ds spins when I rotate both front tires by hand in all drive modes (2w 4h and 4l). Put all 4 meats in the air and tried 4 high and low and got no power to fronts so obviously tc issue. Only thing I find odd is that in 2 high I can hear the front ds clicking/popping a bit when I first place it in gear which I thought was the tc engaging the ds. Also in 4 low I get rear gear reduction but no front wheel power. I'm thinking my best bet is to just get a jy tc because a rebuild Kit is too much for me. How do I figure out what spline tc I need?

For clarity, with the tires on the ground the ds doesn't spin. Only when front end is off the ground. Ill probably pull a tc from the jy (and hope it works) then rebuild the original when I have the money for both the kit and an sye

From my understanding, most people replace the chain when they do a SYE so hopefully that's the problem. As long as you are getting a different T case, you might consider a NP242. It has everything your 231 has but it has a full time mode in which the front ans rear outputs have an open differential between them so it can be driven on dry pavement in all wheel drive. Just something to consider

Looks like as long as the donor vehicle is a 92+ auto you should be good to go. The shifter linkage and shifter itself is the same but there is another shift gate between 2 hi and 4 hi called 4 full time that requires a different shifter cover that identifies the location of the full time shift gate. Also there is a light on the dash that is supposed to say full time that nobody has been able to figure out if it will light up on a 231 equipped Jeep without modification. Guess I'll find out for myself when I get my own 242 and swap it out
