Default 4 wheel drive engage and diengage issue.

I have a 2000 xy 4.0 the 4 wheel drive shifter just has 2h, 4h, N, and 4LO, I was under it greasing it up today and on the front of the top of the transfer case the plug is unhooked, and the plugin is a different one, so I thought I would try to put it in 4 wheel drive, because I have never tried it out. Is the sensor on the front of the transfer case just to let you know what position you have it in, and is the one on the back the one that actuates it? This is the first 4 wheel drive I have had that didn't have looking hubs on it. When I put it in 4 wheel drive is it supposed to be in drive stopped to shift to 4 hi, and then in neutral stopped to shift to 4 lo?

The lever inside is what shifts it into 4wd, there is nothing electric about it, unlike other vehicles.
The plug youre talking about is most likely the one for the light.
Just let off the gas, and pull the lever up into 4h.
For 4l, put it in neutral and go into 4l.

Ok thanks, so is it better to be moving slow before you shift it, because when I stopped it was grinding when I tried to shift it, back to 2 H.

You should be able to shift into 4h "At any legal speed"

I went back and tried it with it moving and it shifting into 4 Hi smooth with out grinding and back to 2 Hi, so I guess it is better to be moving. How can I check the numbers off the transfer case to see if it is the one that came in it, the reason I ask is it has a jasper trans in it, and I don't know why the connector on the front of the transfer case would be different from the one coming from the wiring harness? It says New Process 242 on it and I guess that is called a command trac. I want to find the right plug in so I can hook the light back up.

Sounds like someone swapped a different tcase in, but didnt change the shift bezel.
The 242 is a "full time" transfer case.
Shift pattern would say 2hi, 4ft, 4h, n, 4l. IIRC.

I am going to crawl back under it and write down the numbers on it.

I must have mixed up the numbers from it and looking at the book, I looked at it again it is a new process 231 J so I guess it is the one that came in it, but I still don't know why the plug in is different?

They say you can shift into 4HI up to 55mph. 4LO shouldn't be selected unless your stopped.

I guys I got a quick question in regards to shifting from 2hi to 4hi and back to 2hi. So I rarely use 4hi, but when I do it will be because of ice or snow in the city. The problem is when I turn off the road into a dry parking lot, gas station, ect. I have trouble getting the 4hi to disengage so that I can pull into tight parking spaces and what not and not bind everything up. So my question is what is the fastest and or correct process to disengage 4hi? Do I shift back to 2hi while still moving or should I do it at a stop, if stopped should I be in drive, nuetral or park? Thanks in advance.

Uh... Shift out of 4hi before you get into the parking lot?
At any speed, let off the throttle and pop it into 2hi, I then give it a couple taps of the throttle and it should be out of 4wd.
