Default 4-Wheel Drive

My Cherokee is a 4x4, and today moving a round bale for the horses ( yes with my jeep) I started sinking and thought I put it in 4 wheel high, put it neutral and pulled it back to high. Nothing happened, that I know of, when I was done, I put it backin two wheel drive, and nothing.

My mothers car, when I take it out of four wheel, you can hear it disconnect, and feel when your in it, but it's a newer car too.

Am I doing something wrong to get it in four wheel, or is it not working? I'm not that mechanically inclined so bare with me . I know it sounds like a stupid question, but I have never had a jeep, any help is appreciated.

It's a 1998. It has the four wheel drive stuff on the floor.

I always hear it hear it disconnect it the other car, so that's what I was listening for.

98 wouldn't have that they have 1 piece axel, my truck shifts smooth into 4x4 don't hear anything but it goes in, one way to check transfer case would be put it in 4x4 lift front wheels off ground and try I spin front drive shaft by hand if it won't spin by hand it's in 4x4 if not something up with ur transfer case or linkage

Does the light on the dash come on? Is there any reason other than no noise you think it isn't in 4wd?
