I just got and 1998 cherokee and one thing that I realize is that when I put it in 4 Low, it starts to whine from somewhere in the middle to front of the jeep, but when its in 4 High it sounds like it does when I'm in 2wd. Is this normal? This is my first jeep so I just am not sure.

 

you shouldn't hear any noise difference , make sure its filled full with atf
it could be a bearing going out ...

well your shifting it ...its using different gears in 4low , could be a bad gear as well, hard to tell with out opening it up.

 

every vehicle I have owned has whined in 4lo...

 

i think the whine is normal, i believe the reason is because the gears are straight cut when its in 4lo instead of at an angle. Never ripped a tcase open, but thats what i read anyway.
