Hi guys, it has been a while since I visited here. I have a real problem. I bought both front and rear diferential 4:10 gears from Morris 4X4. Nothing but trouble. First the wrong gears, I know nothing about these things, however they were replaced with the wrong ones the second time. Gears made by SUPERIOR GEARS, a great company. I could not stand to drive it,,noise, lots of it. The second garage I took it to removed all the gears, respaced everything, now I am out another $1200- and it still growls.
I forgot to mention this is with my 2001 XJ classic. I am now looking for a complete front and rear differential with this gear ratio. I love my Jeep. Have 3 XJ's but they all have the same 3:55 ratio. This kinda lengthy but maybe some of you might be of some help. THANKS GUYS!!

um.
when you bought gears, did you buy an install kit, and carriers?
what "shop" did you take it to? gears can not be set up by amatures. sounds like you got screwed by 2 shops, or you and they didn't know that you needed a new carrier.

YES, kits both front and rear. Superior Gear makes one of the only gears made in USA. Gaskets, bearings, seals, even silicone seal for the gaskets. Carrier had to be sent to the second shop, because the wrong one was sent. Poop, I really do not know what really went on,,,,,except I know I am out lots of bucks.

First shop will not refund any money unless Grable told them about the problem & gave them an opportunity to make things right. If he was dissatisfied and simply went to another shop ... well, you know the result. Mine were set up a little off by the tech, and when I told him, he pretty much blew me off. So the $400 I owed him never made the transition & I went to someone else. Anyway, the gears still howl & I've learned to live with it. Spending that much $$$ on "quiet" gears is not a priority to me as long as they work. Maybe later ...
That being said, if you're looking for quiet gears, Superior can be noisy. Really the only "quiet" gears I know of are Nitro & Yukon, with Nitro coming out ahead. The rest of them tend to howl some. Be careful of using used (junk yard) gears - you don't know what you're getting, but then again, OE gears are known to be quiet. As suggested, axle swaps might be your least expensive option at this point.

I can't imagine spending 1200 and driving away with howling gears. There is no reason, other than damaged or bad parts, for correctly set-up gears to howl. I would not have paid the bill until I test drove the car...with the tech on board. Any issues? No money, honey. They are not THAT hard to set-up.
I cannot imagine a single excuse for howling diffs.

wtf don't you get?
take it to a shop that DOES GEARS!
dealerships don't do gears (well). the out-source that. you're gonna pay extra, and they'll probably send it to the same place.
