$714 for replace of flexplate. Holy crap!!!
Well I do not have tranny jack, anybody have ideas on whether this price seems reasonable or should I try to do it myself?

Its not too bad, I would expect higher around where I live actually.
I would highly recommend just doing it yourself. Probably 6-8 hours if you have the right tools and dont hit any big snags. As long as you have a level place to do it, it would be totally worth doing it yourself.
Does your trans need any other work done to it? Nows the time to do the RMS if you need to as well. The majority of the time is obviously dropping + reinstalling the transmission so might as well take care of everything you can while you are in there.

Trans. jack is about $80 new. It's a pita to get the top two e12 bolts. I had to lower the motor as far as I could to get them and I still had to use 3 extensions and a swivel joint with someone holding it on from the top. I would not pay $700 to do it though. Plan on this taking you all day it's not a fast project.

Dont even attempt it without extensions and a few swivel u-joint things to help angle the socket.

Alright guys well I am going to the shop tomorrow at 8AM to see if the flexplate is indeed the problem. I would fix it myself but long story short I don't have the space nor the time.
Also I just backed up a incline and heard a weird grinding/vibration that seemed to vary with the engine RPM....do flexplates act up when you take a incline?
Thank you guys for all the input, I will let you all know if it is the flexplate. I hope it is and not engine trouble. But as MonacaYankee pointed out, since I did overheat and crack the head a few years back, it may very well be engine issues.

Scobar, Yes my RMS has been replaced 2x in like 8 years
OK SO FLEXPLATE IS OKAY
MonacaYankee was nearest to the real problem....it is probably the main bearings for the crankshaft
Shop charged $50 for flexplate inspection (it took them about 70 mins because we tried to find the hairline crack I thought I saw for sure). The bearings are likely shot and they quoted me $1,500 for a removal of engine and basically a rebuild. I have been going really easy on the engine for awhile now since I was half expecting deep engine problems.
So is this a reasonable price, 1500? I will get another quote Friday. Great Christmas present :/

Another Idea....
I have the jeeps factory service manual, I love to learn about engines BUT I have a feeling this job could turn into a can of worms that will PO my parents. I have a simple 2"BB and 30" tires and idk if I could clear the oil pan w/o jack standing it.
Ok so here goes: Would it be a good idea to try and fix the knocking bearing noise myself? I guess if the cranks bad then I'd have to get it polished, IDK what condition the pistons or rods are in, and I also have NEVER torn down a engine.

Can I get away without a total rebuild? I mean just replace the main crank bearings and any other broken/worn parts? Is this smart? In anybody's experience, would it be OK to take a 154,000 mile engine and only replace a few parts w/o doing a total rebuild? I'm on a tight budget and I know budgets do not go well with engine rebuilds. Since I have had the head replaced (cracked after I blew a radiator) I spent a lot on that repair a few years ago and I don't really want to drop 2k into the old engine....if its considered a old engine at 154k mi. So any experienced guys out there have advice for the new kid?
Total Rebuild OR Replace broken things and throw it back together?
