Default 4.0 interchanges

I have a 92 Laredo that I was going to put a newer motor in. I bought what I was told was a 96 Wrangler motor with super low miles. I was giving it the once over before I pulled out my motor and noticed that the oil filter mounting was quite different (old one has the bolt on style and new one is cast in the block) and there doesn't seem to be enough clearance. I was asking around and was told by the local "mechanics" that they weren't interchangeable due to the crank pilot hole among other issues. My Cherokee is an auto tranny and the Wrangler was a 5-speed. Anyone have any ideas? Should I just go with the V8 swap and forget about the 4.0. Thanks!

the only issue with the oil filter mounting is that you have to use a short filter. i put a 2002 4.0 in my 89 xj and it bolted in, more or less. the problem with the crank is sometimes the manufacturer doesn't drill the crank for the transmission input shaft/input bearing. but since your going from 5spd to auto, it shouldn't make a difference. as long as you use you 92 manifolds and accessories, you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks! I appreciate the responses. I will try to capture all the issues once I do the swap and post for future references as well.
