Default are the 4.0 engines a bit noisy?

I have 2 particular noises going on, one of them is at cruising, I swear I can just hear the valvetrain, lap, lap, lap, lap.. it gets faster with rpm, it is not real loud, it's actually pretty faint, but I have a sensitive ear coming from a finely tuned 3.2L turbo VW.

The other sound is a little more alarming, at high RPM, it almost sounds like metal on metal, like the engine is really struggling to get that last few rpms in there.. it has plenty of power, and again, it just sounds a little crazy at WOT at the upper RPM, probably about 4500 or so, I never watched the tach, I just know it sound a little crazy for about 2 seconds before it shifts.

Are the valves adjustable? is this somehting that should be done?

The valve train is a little noisy so what your hear there is normal. Now cant really imagine what you could be hearing around 4500, unless its starting to knock.

Well i pulled a junk yard motor out about aweek and half ago... after looking in all the oil fill caps of the engines in junk yard i spoted one that looked all org in the vehical.. ruffly 143k miles writen on side of jeep... and the rockers looked real pretty inside...
Ok well... rods had some coper starting to show...mains looked real nice...so I decided to just pop rods and mains in and pop in... i have 30- 50- psi oil pressure... and it runs like a raped ape... and the motor has NO NOISES at all... none... so.. to say that its normal... id have to say no its not.. but then yes it is when you talking motors that were not taken care of or have very high mileage.. but like i said... this was junk yard engine...and this is what it looked like inside the valve cover...
