Question 4.0 engines

i have a 92 cherokee limited 4.0 engine. it has a temp sensor near the back drivers side next to the valve cover...( i'm guessing that what it is)... i am replacing the engine with a 98 4.0 but it does not have that sensor... is that going to be a big issue for me?? i;m new to the jeep world so i am really lost....

That's the temperature sender for the dash gauge

U'll have to drill/tap a new hole in the '98 head for the '92 sending unit.

Why not a T fitting on the thermostat housing? Lots easier.

Easier, it in my experience not as accurate, I put a 99 in my 90, I just drilled and tapped for the dash sender, reads nicely and I know the ecu temp sensor is reading a more accurate number

So you're saying the pcm doesn't receive accurate temperature information from the sensor located in the water outlet, really? If the OP doesn't currently have a drill & tap (assuming they already own a drill of course) thats another what $30? What if they wreck the cylinder head in the process?

I believe that's exactly what he is saying. The tips of both the temp sending unit and the coolant temp sensor should be located directly in/surrounded by flowing coolant for the most accurate readings. If the head is not drilled/tapped, the temp gauge sending unit wire could be lengthened and the sending unit re-located to the heater hose close to the t-stat cover. Heater hose mount would also require drill/tap. That way the tips of both the sending unit and sensor would be located in flowing coolant.

No, not the cylinder head. Tap the tstat housing for the dash, and it already should have the ecu sensor tap

In looking at that pic, how does coolant flow/move around the business end of either the sending unit and/or sensor? How is air not trapped around the business end of the sending unit and/or sensor?

If the t-stat cover is drilled/tapped for sending unit, the wire will need to be extended AND caution must be used to keep the wire out of the rad fan.
