IM on the same boat as being new to Jeeps. Look at the Rubicon Express 3.5 super-ride kit. Comes with just about everything you need to lift your Jeep.

Go at least 4.5in. Everyone I know ends up going bigger after 3in.

Same here. After shopping around for a pretty long while it's one of the best deals I've seen. It's quality stuff as well. The 3.5" lifts are a great starting point if you wanna go bigger after a while too.

Hey, if ur looking at 3 inch because itll be cheaper, why don't you look into a junkyard lift, albeit use new parts, not from the jy, but you can buy the parts at differant times, get a good end result while still maintaining the 500 ish price level. I just did it on mine a few weeks ago, so if your interested, or curious, pm me.

any lift over 3-3.5 will open a can of worms. you can easily run 33s on 3" of lift.

True, but done correctly you will have a rig that you would be happy with. It all really depends on your budget and what you plan to do with your rig.
A good example, I installed a 3.5" lift on a friends rig never planning to take it off the payment but wanted the look. Worked for him, lift installed, no SYE, no Track Bar, full leaf packs and new LCA but worked for what he wanted.
It all just boils down to two things, Intentions and budget.

lift is really the least of importance. you need it to get some bigger tires in there, but w/some trimming you can nicely put 31" tires on a 2" budget boost ($70?). Coil spacers and longer shackles would prob be best. A rig on 31" and lockers can go a lot of places.

if ya dont wanna trim/trim much then 9.50 tires and bumpstops are going to be your best friend. otherwise, decide now what you want your jeep to be. if you wheel on the reg, and its your DD, then your going to be doing lots of alignments and u joint replacements. assuming your doing more than just dirt roads, that is.
id say a 2" BB consisting of spacers for the front and a drop shackle for the rear combined with zj coils (+1.5") and depending on how your leafs are, either an aal or bastard pack (cheapest) or new leaf packs (kinda pricey for a budget lift...) this and mild trimming and bigger bump stops will allow for 31" tires with ease.

you can easily trim an inch or so, and keep your stock flares.

Rock Krawler front spring, Bastard pack in the rear,4 Monroe sense tracks in the right length and some new lower control arms. Best bang for your buck 3'' you can get and will clear 31s easy
