33's with no lift!

I'm going to be picking up a Dremel this weekend with a bunch of cutting wheels. I'm going to be trimming my front and rear fenders so I can clear 33's when I acquire two more. I already have 2 33/12.50/15 M/T Baja Claw's. I'm running 31/10.50/15's on the Jeep now and I have quite a bit of clearance with them so I figure with the fenders trimmed I'll have more than enough room for 33's. This is my DD so it's not going to be wheeled. Strictly mall crawler  I got the idea from this thread...

thats exactly what i did i started with 31s and no lift then went to 33s with no lift and now i'm at 33s with 1.75 lift it worked great but if your gunna run those 12.50s i would run after market wheels on stock wheels they are about 1/2" from the springs and you'll have to lose the rear swaybar

Been thinking along these same lines with 31's did you remove the plastic inner fender liners?

MaddXJ85 09-30-2009 07:05 PM

You shouldnt have any problems. get rid of the rear sway bar anyway that thing is just useless lol. The only problem you're gonna have is using that Dremel. I tried to cut mine with one and went through a new about every four inches. Just use a jig saw and be careful:thumbsup:

Would a grinder be adviseable or no ? My rear sway bar is removed how high up on fenders can you cut with no major problems?

MaddXJ85 09-30-2009 07:39 PM

you're gonna have a hard time using a grinder and its not exactly safe. you can cut the front as far as you want however there is another flange inside the front wheel well that you will have to bend over but dont worry it looks fine. as far as the back goes you'll end up cutting into where its doubled but try not to cut too far. then just use some paintable caulking to seal the gap. you'll have to do this to insure no water gets in there. it sounds like alot but its not that bad. if you have any other questions let me know and I can send you pics of mine.

I have 4" lift and 32's wanted to go 33's. Sure i can fit it but the tires would be rubbing all over making more headaches to fix. what type of rig do you want. I know you said it is a DD but still if you want to do any offroading your going to kill your tires and fenders. Now what some one is going to say JUST ADD BUMPSTOPS but you can only bumpstop so much before there is not enough up travel. I would stick with the 31's get a 8" wide rims and trim it up. Still will be plenty good for a little of everything. I have been there before wish I got some advice from some one before I wasted money on tires that where just to damn big.

well i hope this helps... the gap is only about 1/4" at the widest spot keep in mind this is only a three inch lift in rear and inch and a half in front.

Did you remove the plastic fender liners? thanks

MaddXJ85 09-30-2009 09:11 PM

OH YEAH! you have to.... they dont do anything anyway

djlarroc 09-30-2009 09:19 PM

I think 33s on little to no lift is good, but not on 33x12.50s. Best way to do it is on stock rims, or better 15x7 w/4" back space and 33x10.50s.

MaddXJ85 09-30-2009 09:24 PM

yeah you might want to cosider going with a skinnier tire.. without any lift your not gonna be able to stuff those 12.50s in there.. it just wont work...

cj11 09-30-2009 09:52 PM

Even at 4" a 33x12.50 wont stuff I have 8" wide rim with 4" back space and the rear will catch the out side of the well

When i cut the rear I used the cut and fold make relief cuts inbetween the pinch welds then i used silicone on the inside of the well where i made the cuts then hammer it over rubber mallet works the best not so hard on the paint it will still crack from the stress.

If you cut the welds off it will open up the body and weaken the unibody. and I am sure that would not be an easyfix.
