33s are pretty big for an XJ- you will need a lift and you will probably need to trim as well unless you go HUGE on your lift or don't intend to wheel it.
Just my thoughts from what I have seen and read here. :-) 3" lift and lots of trimming you can maybe get away with 33s.

Plan on at least 6" if you don't wanna trim and if you wheel it.
It can be done with minimal lift with a lot of cutting too.
But I mean a lot of cutting lol.
Go with a 3.5"-4.5" lift and trim the genders to where the flares used to be and it should fit nicely.
