I would just stick with 30s even if you go 3" then you will only have little to no rub.

SLIGHT rubbing? Ahahahaha, its alot more than slight rubbing. If you're gonna be running 31s I'd recommend a 3" lift.

The general consensus is that the largest tire you can run stock with little to no rubbing is a 30x9.50 You can fit 31s stock if you get friendly with a saws-all or angle grinder and don't mind cutting sheet metal.

ok, thank you all for your input. I have a brand new set of the 31" BFG AT's on grizzley wheels on my wrangler and I am trading it in on an XJ and those tires are not so good and it has steel wheels that are rusty. I would like to not loose my new tires if at all possible. The XJ would only be stock for about 2 weeks until i get all the lift components.

Then definitely swap the tires...and if you have another vehicle drive that and us the XJ minimally until you can get the lift parts.
