Default 31 10.50 Wrangler RT/S

I just picked up a set of GY Wrangler 31 10.50's on American Racing forged alum. wheels. Tires are new, wheels are nice but not new.

They were on a 1995 xj. Mine is a 1994. The guy said they did NOT rub...but I just took a set of 31 10.50 Pro Comp Mud Terrains off the car because they were tearing up the wheel lip moldings.

The GY RT/S tires look smaller than the Pro Comp Mudders at first glance. I'm likely going to bolt them on tomorrow and go for it but does anyone know if there is a difference between 1995 and 1994 that would account for the other guy being able to use them?

The Pro Comps were on the factory stock steelies - the gray five spoke ones. They tore the wheel lips up in front, didn't notice any impact on the rears.

I have since discovered the rear springs sagged and the DPO put in longer shackles. There were a set of pucks in the parts box that came with the car; the DPO never installed them for some reason. I think if I put the pucks in the fronts will clear but the car won't be level - probably sit nose high and I hate that look.

I saw a post this morning about something "7" rear AAL's but now I can't find the post. I'd hate to pop for new springs for the rears - Eaton Detroit Spring quoted me $500 for a set...can't do that. I need a cheap solution. The tires/wheels I got are very nice. The RT/S tires are like new and the wheels are good for many years.

Cheap solution is to adjust the knuckle end screws so the tires don't rub against the LCAs. On the rear, trim the rear edge off the fender flares. Another solution is a RC 3in lift with AALs and coils (90 bucks on ebay) or a teraflex 2in budget lift with spacers and shackles, 130bucks on ebay. If you want the rear not to sag take the AALs.

The RC AAL set-up makes sense. It's cheap enough to justify on my budget and looks like it'll get the job done.

Should I replace the front springs with the RC ones or add the pucks to the factory coils?

If I lift the front with new springs or pucks, is it still necessary to adjust the knuckle end screws?

Finally, if I use an AAL, do I use the original shackles or the longer ones the DPO installed?

i would go to the JY grab some leafs from another leaf pack and put them in! the only thing you need to buy is longer u-bolts and spring clamps (but you can make those for cheap cheap)

Do you use the long ones or the shorts? I've got access to another set of sagging leafs - can you save me some trial & error time? Which ones are best to use?

My goal is to clear 31 10.50 Goodyear RT/S tires on American Racing forged aluminum wheels with standard backspacing.

I don't rock crawl...I use the Jeep on a farm in Michigan. Snow, mud, trees, and UAW members starving to death in the woods are the only obstacles.

i would grab an S10 main leaf and secondary leaf, and another factory cherokee main leaf,

go in the order:
cherokee main leaf,
cut down S-10 main leaf
cut down cherokee main leaf
s-10 secondary leaf
cut down cherokee secondary leaf
cherokee 3rd leaf
cherokee mini leaf.

you should end up with a 6 leaf pack. you want the leafs to be as long as possible to support your load, yet not have the ends of each leaf close to each other.

i use the rule of thumb when making a bastard pack that you want each leaf to be 3" shorter at each end than the last leaf.

Also if you have an angle grinder thin the last 2-3" of the leaf. You dont want flat cut leafs.

round the ends of the leafs and thin them a bit. that way they dont "cut" into the other leafs.

Bastard packs don't sag, but they ride like ****.
Full length springs in the front is always better than spacers.

Excellent advise. Thank you all.

My local JY is dismal but I have a local guy parting out an XJ. I'm going to try that route first.

I can tell you're right by the tread pattern. They would load up with mud instantly. For me the advantage is they are quiet...which will help reduce my wife's uncertainty about using the car.

correct.

When i did mine i just wanted more load capability (stock sitting on 215's) so i used another cherokee leaf set. didnt gain any lift, didnt change the ride quality. but i could tow a trailer more level and load the back up with ppl with minimal sag.

it was nice.
