Default 2WD 8.25 vs 4WD 8.25

This may be a stupid question. But what is the differnce between the two? I have a 2WD XJ and would like to upgrade.

related to the axle? nothing.

to convert to 4x4 you'd need a front axle with the matching gear ratio, the front/rear driveshafts and transfer case, and you need to either swap the tranny output or swap trannies.

I thought you HAD to swap the tranny? I am in the middle of this process now and got a new (to me) tranny and 231

I mean as far as the guts inside. Do they work the same? Will I have more traction in the rear with a 4WD 8.25 rather than a 8.25 out of a 2WD?

You have to at least remove the transmission, as changing the output shaft requires a full disassembly of the transmission. Its easier just to swap the whole unit unless your into rebuilding the magic box.

Absolutely no difference in the axle. They are exactly the same.

Cool, thanks. I was just wondering if I screwed up. I'm looking to convert to 4WD in the near future. About a year ago my D35c took a crap and I came up on a 8.25 out of another 2WD for a good price. I was hoping I didn't have to swap it again.

Is there some sort of Chart or Page that shows the gear ratio for the 8.25? I'm looking to find out what gear ratio I have. My 8.25 came out of a 2WD, September 96/XJ Unlimited with tow package.

There should be a tag on the diff, it has the ratio on it. If you can't find the tag, the only way to be 100% sure is to open it up and count teeth.

If it came from a manual, it should be 3.07. Auto's are 3.55. Not sure if the towing package changed it to 3.73's or not

Don't see this mentioned yet so I'll chime in - you'll need a new drive shaft as the D35s and C8.25s have different pinion lengths.

You could contact Chrysler and ask for the build sheet for your XJ. If I remember correctly it tells you what your gear ratios are.

Probably be easier/cheaper to just sell your 2wd as is and buy a 4wd...
Unless you find sweet deals on all the parts.
