242 to 231

Hey guys. I have a 2000 xj with a 242 t-case and I have a 98 xj with a 231. I have the 98 for sale and was thinking that i would really like a 231 in my 2000. Is it as simple as just swapping them out- driveshafts/mounts etc. Want to do asap. thank you:dunno:

should swap directly except for the linkage and harness.

Okay so linkage and harness would need to come with 231 to put in place of 242. Hows that harness run? Where to etc?

Why do you want the 231 instead of the 242

I don't know. What do you think is better? I like the idea of an EZ sye for 231. Seems there is better aftermarket support for the 231.

i like the 242. how much lift are you goin to go?

Im leaning toward the 6.5 iron rock offroad long arm w/ 36" iroks. Or maybe the 8" rusty's long arm if I feel rich enough.

then i would stay with the 242 for the full time 4x4

Yea I like that to for driving in the snow but I do not deem it necessary for offroad use. Do you use full time on the trail?

How does that justify staying with 242?

No, it is better to use part time offroad.

xjrev10 Jan 28, 2009 07:37 PM

yea i always use part- time. I do not plan on ever using this as a daily driver after it is built... at least not in the snow-that was the only good use for full time that i have found

Then by all means swap that thing out. The SYE is cheaper and the 231 does have better aftermarket support. The only reason I haven't swapped my 242 out for a 231 is because I already have the SYE in it.

SYE for a 242 is a little more involved than for a 231 ain't it?:dunno:

It costs more upfront, but you get most of the difference back in the core charge refund. However, you can't get a HD SYE kit for the 242, whereas you can for the 231. There isn't much of a difference though, just the spline shaft has to be set up differently, and that is why they do it for you, unless you want to do the Hack-n-Tap kit.

MasterShakeXJ Jan 28, 2009 07:44 PM

you cant do an sye with a 242, you gotta do a hack n tap. the 231 allows for a full sye.
