Default 231J Transfer Case Inquiry

This is somewhat of a newbie question, but I am looking to rebuild my transfer case after cracking the front half of mine. I found a front half of the case for sale with C-16118 N casing number. My cracked casing number is C-16118 AX. Can someone please explain the difference and if the casing alone is interchangeable? Thanks in advance!

AJ, weekends can be pretty slow here, you might have better luck midweek.
I'm a 231 fan BTW. I don't doubt your 01 has some bung/hole or something the earlier might not have. For lord knows what! Don't forget aussieJeep or Great lakes XJ forums.....

I'm thinking most people would go on craigslist and just get a whole new used TC and start from there?

The parts I have looked for don't have the letter designation after the number. Bottom line is that the front half seems to be the same for Dodge and Jeep

Thanks guys - I was thinking the same..that all front halves were the same, until I looked at another C-16118 N that did not include the 4x4 sensor plug, which was the only noticeable difference. This brings me to my next question - can anyone tell me if I opt for this case and simply don't plug in the 4x4 plug, will I simply not have a 4x4 indicator light? The XJ has a mechanical 4x4 lever so I am not too worried about it engaging? Thanks again! - Andy

Yes, you don't need the light.
