In my 2000 XJ with a 242 both Full and Part-Time have their own lights. Part-Time is yellow and Full-Time is green. And going into 4-Lo it goes back to Part-Time. Originally Posted by Programbo

I had a 98 with a 231 in it and I don't even know what the lights were like on it cause the bulbs were blown. Oh well..
When shifting the 242, you'll go into Part-Time first, and then one more notch back is Full-Time. Not sure is that's what you were asking.

All these people with 242's in an old XJ.....Here in New Engand, these things are like spotted leopards. I have not seen ONE for sale in over 6 mo's

My 242 "diff" works well. Last weekend did a snow trip and kept it in full time High. Got onto a trail and couldnt get up a hill. My friends yelled at me to stop bc I broke something, only the front tires were moving. I laughed, dropped it in part time High and easily moved up the hill.

Me personally I love my 231 case. The full time safe feeling is that extra something, however I've gotten use to shifting on the fly at 70mph when its starts pouring buckets and then Shifting back when it stops. Same thing with. Snow and parking lots and such. Shifting on the fly is an art

sorry, i should've said the 242 was put in there for the soccer moms.
anyway, both cases work for all intensive purposes. but the 231 has aftermarket support and less to go wrong.
it's kinda like auto vs. stick.
i just hope jeep doesn't put a solenoid actuated push button 4wd thing on the dash.
