Default 205/75R15 ok on my xj?

i have a 96 cherokee and wondering if I could switch. I can get an almost new pair of Douglas EXTRA-TRAC2 tires for pretty cheap. Would this be an ok switch? I have 225/75R15's on it now and am more worried about the brand then the size but would take all educated opinions. Thank you in advance,
Lee

I cant tell you spit about brand
but in the last 11 months i have swapped out my tires 4x so i can give you an idea of tire size.
Im rough on my tires, i do rescue work in my jeep so im always getting holes and punctures and w/e.

My original 4 tires that came with my jeep were 215/75/15s - this is the standard stock size for jeep(XJs)

after balding them out i swapped out for some directional 205/70/15s cause they were like $50 for 4 (Directionals - what a load of crap)

well, i ran that for a few months then noticed i had some bad wear patterns swapped again for some 205/70/15s - by this time im sitting on 2" lift
got some holes in those and swapped again for some 215/75/15s

Finally found the rims i wanted and got a good deal on some bigger tires
so i upgraded my lift again and now have 3" and my rims are 4"BS
im now sitting on 31x10.5x15 and couldnt be happier
these things take me where my small tires couldnt

so, i can tell you, i have run almost every combination of small / stock - light truck tires and nothing wrong with them unless you are trying to do trails with them, if thats the case invest in some quality bigger tires

i know i really didnt answer your question, now that i look back and read it again, thats the problem with answering questions at 330am, sorry about that
but at least you know tire size and width isnt a problem when you stay under 235/75 and stock height

guess im headed to bed now

No, the tires are too small. You're speedo will read faster than you are actually going and will rack up more miles than you're actually traveling. It will look like you're getting better gas mileage but you're not because your odometer is putting on more miles than you go.

Your engine and tranny will be turning faster which will put more wear on those parts and their life span will be diminished. Stick to stock size (which is 225/75/15, NOT 215), or maybe one bump bigger (235's). Going to 31" will help with offroad traction but again your gas mileage will begin to suffer, your speedo will read slower than you're actually going and the odometer will read as though your not going as far as you actually did.

i was always advised going smaller than stock recommendation was not good. not sure i would do this combo.

i can tell you that i went with 30x9.5x15 and i am very happy with this configuration. I drive my jeep usually 2x a week and 99.99% on pavement. Has not had a negative impact on my mpg.

I was hoping the size wasn't a big enough difference to effect the speedo/tranny. I probably won't go with them then. If my math serves me there is a 2 inch difference in total height...between 235 and 205. Is it only 1 inch difference your suppose to go?
thanks,
Lee
