P0432 Trouble code & I can't pass smog on a 2001 XJ
The Code P0432: Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold.
I need some help with this one guys. Would this be a bad catalytic converter?
Front Catalytic Converters or The back catalytic converter? or o2 sensors?
Please any help would be greatly appreciated ;]
Thank You

How is your engine? Done any work lately on it? New O2 sensors? Any coolant loss or rising oil level? Exhaust leaks?
I found this:
Trouble Code: P0432
Catalyst Efficiency Below Normal (Bank 2)
Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine speed at 1200-1700 rpm in closed loop with the throttle open for over 2 minutes, ECT Sensor more than 147ºF, MAP Sensor signal from 15.0-21.0" Hg, and the PCM detected the switch rate of the rear O2 reached 70% of the switch rate of the front O2.
Possible Causes:
* Air leaks in at the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipes
* Base engine problems (high coolant or engine oil consumption)
* Catalytic converter damaged or has failed
* Front O2 older (aged) than the rear O2 (O2 is lazy)

I had the same code on my 01 and the only fix was replacing the cat. It's $250 for a walker brand from advanced auto and a direct bolt on. I hope you can fix yours by replacing the 02 sensors good luck with it
Please post the fix for yours as I am in the same predicament dont know if front cat. is bad or lower 02s Thanks PS replaced rear cat. also all 4 02s are up front

There is no rear catalytic converter on the California spec Cherokee (with 4 O2 sensors and 2 mini cats in the engine bay). What looks like a rear catalytic converter is really just a resonator.
If thats the case why do they call them mini-cats? besides the rear cat. that was replaced looked the same as the pic. you posted on another thread right down to the rust.

I had that same code and the check engine light came on and all the car needed was o2 sensor i think. Well that's what my mechanic told me. Try that before a cat

My 2001 XJ is California emissions with THREE Cats! Two mini cats up front and the regular large cat in the rear. It's a cat at the rear and NOT a resonator! I've had to replace it once before. All three cats on this Cherokee are mucho expensive too!
Just got this on a scanner. 2001 4.0 2"rough country with 31's. Any help? I was told the cat or the 02... I'm a single girl that loves her Jeep, will do anything to make it right. Just asking for advice or what I need to do to fix the problem.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Just spent the last year with a P0432 on my '00 with CA emissions. There are other things that could throw this CEL. Fuel trims out of whack, vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks, O2 sensors, etc. Thing is that 95% of the time people say it is the cat. Checked all the other possible culprits as best I could and then did the cat. No more P0432. At least not yet. Has only been about 2 weeks.

Paid $110 for a Walker cat from Rock Auto and it's a direct slip/bolt-on (you'll need to buy u-clamps or you can get the other fancier kind that don't crush the pipe). You can see if a junk yard will give you money for your old one or http://www.sellyourcatsdirect.com/ca...ter-recycling/ will buy it but they only gave me $40 for mine. The material in mine was all broken and there wasn't a lot of it so I wasn't expecting much.
