2001 Jeep XJ Cherokee 4.0 engine compatibility
I blew the engine in my 2001 XJ Cherokee. I want to replace the motor but the yard motors available are way too expensive for my wallet right now. I have the coil pack system (all 2000 and 2001's do as I am told). I have built over 10 1991, 1990, 1993, 1995's over the years. I have 3 fresh 4.0 liter engines in my garage a 1993, 1994 and 1995. I would like to use one of them in the 2001. I am told that the engines are different. After spending time on the phone with a very helpful woman at Marshall Engines I have only been able to determine that the difference between the 1999 and the 00 - 01 is the angle of the oil filter. Others tell me that the engine mount bosses are different and that the actual K frame is mounts differently to the engine making a swap impossible.
On the other hand I checked and looked it looks like a 4.0 from a Grand and maybe even the Wrangler up to 2004.
I understand that the distributor in the earlier engines must be swapped for the sending device. But as best I see the 1999 and the 2000-2001 have identical casting numbers for the block except as I noted for the angle of the oil filter mount cast into the block.
So ... can anyone give a definitive answer? will the engine mount the same in either block casting? are the mounting locations different?
Throw in a last issue .. I understand that the heads (casting 0311?) are prone to cracking on the 2000 & 2001. That you can use the head (casting 0630) from the 1996-1999 engine (with larger valves?) in place of it... so .. maybe and 1996 - 1999 engine instead?
I am in trouble .. my business has been slow so I am cash poor.. If I can use a 1996-1999 motor that would reduce my cost and simplify things..
I appreciate the help...
I have enjoyed this forum for a long time and its intelligent input from many like minded Jeep enthusiasts.

When you say "blew" the motor, did you put a window in the block?
Spin a main? Bend a rod? Suck a valve?
Also...what's the mileage?
Do you know the actual condition of the motor?

The blocks are interchangeable and so are the heads.
Even if the bosses are different (i doubt) the mounting holes on the frame are in the same position.
The important things are all the same, (only for HO engines): tranny mount, engine mounts, head ports. Everything else is recoverable from your blown 2001.

Take any block you want use the head and all asse. from your 2001 including the cam sensor in place of the dis. and you will be fine. If you havent replaced your 0331 head replace it with and after market head you need the same 0331 head to replace its just the aftermarket ones will have tha extra materail in the #3 and 4 cylinder area to rule out cracking ,and you will be fine good luck.

Use the 0331 head for the reason it is the only head with the holes for the coil pack. But yes all the heads will bolt on but the older heads will also make the intake miss algined by 1/2 inch to thus restricting flow, and the real old renix head well dont even bother.

Thanks Rich and all you guys ... now I will hunt for an aftermarket head.
CAEMI - Yes the rod has renovated and installed a fist sized bay window in around the 3rd or 4th cylinder along with a very nice set of about 32 teeth in the oil pan.... gotta love it...
Well I suppose out comes the old engine tomorrow and time to find that head.
Thanks again...
BTW If anyone else has any more specific things to do or watch out for I would appreciate the input..
I assume that I should swap the flywheel from the 2001 motor onto the other one.

Check on e bay there are a couple companys that sell on there a little bit cheaper than they do on there website.Just make sure they are a company on there website off of ebay to be safe good luck. Yes on flywheel might be worth it to replace it and loctite your bolts make sure to have a new oil pump and screen, oil pan gasket check timing chain etc harmonic balancer.

Just wondering how your project was coming along...i have the same issue, bought a 00 xj, needs an engine...and i'm to poor to afford the 00 up engine for it...let me know how yours, turns out. I called ATK a remanufacturer, and they told me you wouldn't even be able to get the engine to start if you tried using an older block.

I have the same issue but in reverse, i have a 1998 XJ 4x4 with a blown engine, i bought a 2001 XJ 4x4 engine that's bolted to it's tranny. can i install it as it is ? i have all the engines wiring intact as well as the ECU. The 2001 engine had 212000 before the car was rolled.

I have a 2000 jeep classic, The 4.0 motor I have found can be swaped with almost every jeep set up u have so long as u are replaceing a 4.0 with a 4.0 there are few things that has changed over the years with the motors, oil filter angel, intake and header size. I spent a lot of time looking in to this b\c I got my 00 with a motor that was ran over heated to the point it blew the heater core in the car, cracked the rad and melted the thermostat oh and once I pulled the head I found the piston walls were even a little melted at the tops lol I hope they had fun doing it.
ok, this is how I found it to work,
I used a 99 4.0 motor in my 00, only one I could find around here.
the intake from the 99 had be used
the headers from the 99 had to be used (2 port to 1 and opening size on the heads)
the oil filter angel on the 99 is the same as the 00 so no worrys there
but if u had to b/c the angel is off use the old oil filter housing off the old motor to the new one it will bolt up I found. I did one already the motor was an 85 4.0 in to a 96 body.
now as the Ig system one had the dist (99) and the other cop (coil on plug) The 99 head did not have the mounting holes for the cop but the cop rail will fit on every plug just fine, there is a small metal bracket for the battery. frame to hold down, I used this to make my cop rail hold down two of them I bent them in the form of a U almost you can grab them from the bone yard they work great b/c of there predrilled holes in them and the type of steel there made out of. There is two bolts on the valve cover that has extened threads on that side. move them to the #2 bolt holes in the back and front on the valve cover or use the ones from the old motor and bolt down the brackets to hold the cop rail on.
As far as the snc shaft from the 00 make sure u mark the TDC on it befor u pull it out it will save time and not on the casting. TCD on the new one your putting in and drop it in, they do make a tool u can use if u pulled it befor marking it but most of the time u are olny going to get that tool if u get a new snc shaft it should come in the box, I had to get one for a 02 ford F150 I made that mistake lol. every thing else bolts up just fine on the motor, I did take off all the 99 sensors and installed the ones from the 00 I did not ck if any of them would work for a 00 wiring ie plugs, I had them I swaped them. the tone ring on the flywheel from the 99 I used it just in case there was a slight change in them. there was not a lot of info on if it was changed over the years.
I have put all most 1000 miles on it. so far with no problems even off roaded it as soon as I got the motor in it needed a mud bath lol.

I know this is an old post but I have searched a lot about this and have found very different views. I am looking into putting a 94 4.0 into my 2000 cherokee. The idea is that I am going to stroke the old engine before I swap it in.
Is this doable if I switch over all of my accessories or will the engine mounts etc not line up? I am fine with moving everything from the 2000 engine onto the 1994 I just need to know if it will fit. I am picking up the 94 tomorrow and will be able to do a better comparison then but am hoping to research before hand.

Unfortunately, it looks like I may be joining this crowd as well.
I just blew my head gasket in my 2000 xj limited, and am thinking that the head is probably shot now.
I do however have a 87 commanche sitting in my backyard with a 4.0i and a 5spd peugot tranny that has 81k miles on it. Was going to end up scrapping the old truck but figured now would be a good time to consider keeping the motor.
Any insight would be appreciated.
