2001 cherokee engine tick?
looked at a jeep today and it was making a sound like a fan hitting a shroud but when i got under it and looked it wasn't coming in contact it like a tick but not constant when he hit the gas it had a pause in between it didnt realy speed up could it be sticky lifter or a bad torque converter it has 217000 miles and is said to not been dogged or anything
I had this issue with my truck .. under normal driving it was fine but under load or in 4x4 it sounded like the fan hitting .. It was .... i had a motor mount that was worn and causing my engine to rotate just enough to hit the very bottom of the shroud .. After i realized what it was i fixed the motor mount .. You could also have a trans mount that would do the same thing .. Check all your mounts and make sure they are in good shape .... Radiator mounts also ...
yeah ill be going back in a few days to get it ill climb under it and crank it up and try to listen to where its coming from its not like a fast tick or anything and kinda goes away when you speed up

"Ticking" from the engine bay in a 12 year old Jeep with a 4.0... hmmmmm...
- Mechanical fan
- Electric fan
- Fan hitting something
- Bad coil
- Bad coil boot (arcing to spark plug)
- Noisy injector
- Noisy alternator
- Noisy water pump
- Noisy power steering pump
- Worn belt
- Worn bearings on any of the belt-driven pulleys/pumps/accessories
- Sticky lifters
- Loose flexplate bolt
- Cracked flexplate
- Evap solenoid
- ABS trying to implode
- Budding bearing issue in engine
- Noisy oil pump
- Exhaust leak
- Cracked exhaust manifold
- Loose manifold
- Bad manifold gasket
- Some jackass squirrel hiding behind the coolant reservoir making clicking sounds
Get a piece of hose, couple feet long, and listen around to see if you can pinpoint the noise. Cheap alternative to a mechanic's stethescope

well i hope he dose not think im mental crawling under there with a piece of pipe haha but thats what ima do i already gave him a little bit to hold it but if it has a Bering in the bottom end going out ill keep looking he will probably be mad thought because he took off the bumper and winch and all because he wonted more than i had to add it in
and there were no leaks when i crawled under a little rear main but nothing serious and i looked at the oil and its clean

If it is an engine bearing, the noise may be real obvious at idle and disappear as RPM goes up. Ask me how I know. My XJ purrs like a diesel at idle...
