After last years snow storms my roof started to rust. I went to the pawn shop and bought a palm sander for $15. I them went to home depot and bought sand paper and 2 cans of black gloss spray paint. I think all together it cost my under $15-$20. It took about 2hrs for me to sand down the entire roof, wipe everything down and put 3 coats of spray on.

Almost what he said....get a sander, get some 80 grit sand paper and then some 400 grit.

Sand all the spots with rust, or with rust under it to bare metal with the 80 grit, then take the 400 to the paint to get the clear off, try not to go down to bare metal...

This next part the paint process is what will be the key to it EVER lasting long. Prep it good, clean the surfaces...then you HAVE to prime it....now you really should echi-prime the bare metal, then regular prime over that....but you can probably get away with a just primer...then paint.

get some rust converter/ rust dissolver sold at your local hardware store or autoparts store often marketed as naval jelly its really phosphoric acid. Anyway sand or grind the pant off wherever there is surface rust and then paint some naval jelly on there let it sit for about 10-15 minutes but not much longer. This stuff chemically converts the rust to ferric phosphate which is black instead of red and will stuff the rust from spreading any further. If you just sand off the loose rust and paint over it you will slow the rust but it will come back. Completely grind all rust away to bare metal prime and paint or use Naval Jelly then prime and paint.

Get a pic that would help, also You will have to sand till the rust is gone. If there is no sign of rust you should be good Just sand it lightly so the new paint sticks good.

yea i would actually get a roll on primer that you can use a roller and brush to paint on cause they make some awesome bust rust primer. then you can sand down the primer and paint it a few coats and should be good.
