2000 XJ misfire/bad coil/engine mystery
Hi guys, intriguing title hey?
I've been dealing with this annoying misfire that's been getting progressively worse.
After doing a bunch of research I read that the CPS is a usual suspect and since I had a spare, I decided to try switch that out....what a fking ball ache. Nearly dropped a bolt in the bell-housing😵, a 30min job took my fat arms 4hrs to do! Anyway thats besides the point...it didn't work.
So next prime suspect was the coil rail, found a super cowboy way to test spark, by exposing the coil springs, laying a metal pipe parallel to it and cranking the ignitionIt's clear that that is indeed the problem, C1's coil doesn't even have a spring and produces no spark, guess I've been driving with 5 cylinders for some time, plus the other sparks are all pretty orange, signs of an bad coil.
Side note: I noticed the coil rail wasn't attached with the usual bolts, there are two brackets holding it in place because there are no holes in the head!!!!! This seems very suspect. If the engine is indeed a 2000 there should be holes to bolt the coil on to it. My only conclusion is that the engine has been swapped?!?!? Perhaps a cracked head? Any ideas?

Interesting...yeah I bought it a few months back, nad for the age the engine bay looks pretty clean. Guessing it was a cracked head? Any major difference between the two heads?

Other than provisions to mount the coil rail on the 0331, the 0331 has different exhaust ports than the 0630.
Does you Jeep have the 2000 exhaust manifold, Fig 33 or 34? See pic below.
