2000 XJ Manual Trans Issue
Need an assist with diagnosing a manual transmission problem.
My XJ gradually started to have rough shifting and finally no shifting without forcing it. I changed the transmission fluid and thought that cured it but alas no. Luckily it didn't leave me in the woods as I was able to force a gear shift.
Symptoms
-Shifts without the engine running
-Won't start in gear
-Reverse grinding with engine running
-Won't shift with the engine running

Or the synchros are shot from using the wrong gear oil. What did you put in for fluid?
Reverse doesn't have a synchro, so I'd lean towards the clutch not disengaging. I also experienced this with the pilot bearing in the end of the crank seizing. It would also creep forward in gear even with the clutch pushed in.

Could you possibly have broken one of your shift forks feom the rail? Not starting in gear could be because your engaging two gears at once but then again if you had the stick in neutral and the fork broke off engaged in another gear you also would be moving with the engine running and clutch disengaged.
I know little about clutch setup but far more about manual trans.
Sounds like either way your best off to atleast give the clutch some inspection if not removing the whole trans. There wouldn't be much to see if you just removed the stick but if you did and there was any free floating shift block bits in there then your definitely onto something

Sounds like the clutch not fully releasing to me. That would prevent the engine from starting in gear, and make it hard shift. I would start by checking the fluid in your master cylinder.
I'm going to pull the shifter and take a look into the top and see what I can see. With the engine off the shifter at least goes into every gear freely and I don't feel anything is loose or off. Stupid question but does the manual have a neutral safety switch or is that only the automatics?
