So I climbed under the jeep while it was running today and it definitely sounds like the flex plate.
On a swap note. I have 97 ZJ with 5.2 I picked up for $500. Runs and drives perfect. I know it ain't an LSx but it might do when the time comes for a new motor.

Nope, new Exides, gels.
If an Exide sits on the shelf more than three months, they take it back, mark it 'blem', ship it out to local independents to sell cheap.
$180 1100 amp battery for $65.

However, an individual could buy a top-line Wrangler Unlimited and spend that much too. Or more.

Just got in from checking the bolts and it is not them. They were all tight. I went ahead and pulled them off and put loctite on them and put them back on and it still made the same noise.
So I am leaning towards it being a lifter/lifters.

If you're lucky though it's just a stuck/collapsed lifter. Pull the valve cover and inspect the valvetrain for anything loose or out of place.

Sounds just like my 2000 XJ (with 202k miles) that broken a piston skirt. Mine sounded louder than this, but it was probably further gone. I swapped it out for a 96 4.0L. Apparently with other design changes in 2000, they redesigned the pistons so the skirts got thinner. After 200k miles they seem to like breaking apart and ending up in the oil pan somewhere.
