2000 XJ, cranks but won't start, P1694 code
Hi everyone,
I'm running into a no-start issue after swapping out my knocking 4.0L for another motor.
1. Cranks fine, but won't kick over
2. After ~30 seconds the odometer says "no bus"
3. P1694 is the only code my scanner picks up
4. None of the gauges turn on, just the odometer and warning lights
5. Installed new CPS, no change
6. Unplugged the CPS to see if the gauges work then, nope
When I go to start it I'm pretty sure I don't hear the fuel pump prime. I haven't checked the fuse block fuses yet, just the engine bay ones which seem fine.
Any other ideas on what to check? I checked all my ground wires on the engine... the harness ground by the oil dipstick, the two grounds down by the alternator, the body ground off the back of the head to the firewall, and the one from the battery to the frame, all tight.

You could start by going through this fuse fault checklist.
Fuse F9 in the JB is the main power source for the instrument cluster.
Except your engine won't start, but check F9 anyway.

Figured it out, the connector for the cam position sensor was all frayed. That caused the signal wire to ground out and thus the "no bus" message. I started by just unplugging it and trying to start it. Still wouldn't start but I got my gauges back and the no bus warning went away. She started right up after that!
