2000 Jeep XJ Overheated. On the side of the road. Pls help
So my 2000 jeep xj has been overheated a few times. Weirdly, it’s always been on the interstate. I’ve replaced the radiator twice already. The thermostat, water pump, all the hoses are new. Hell I even put hood spacers to help get some of the hot air. I haven’t replaced the radiator cap though. I was just driving down the interstate and I saw a liquid coming out from under my hood, I looked at my temp gage and it was on 230 or whichever the first line past 210 is. I pulled over, still on 230 and shut the jeep off. It then went to 260. I popped the hood and I saw coolant had gotten all of the driver side of the hood. Especially around the cap. As well as in the wheel well of the front driver side tire. You think it’s just my cap? I have literally just replaced every thing else I could think of. I’m on the side of the road so any help is appreciated. Thanks

Yes the fans work but some sensor is bad because recently my jeeps temp gauge will shoot down to 150 from 210 very fast. But when it sits still it works normally and when it gets to 210 the electrical fan cuts on. I also don’t have a shroud on my mechanical fan, but that’s in the mail coming in a few days. I know that can make it run hotter. Also, I should probably know this but my overflow tank now has barely any coolant in it but I have a gallon in the back seat. Even though it’s warm should I add a little just to get me home? The temp guage reads 150 now but with that sensor messed up I don’t trust it completely. I’ve been parked for about an hour though so it’s probably somewhere around there

Your overflow tank has an indicator on there for cold and hot I believe (or it may say full and add). Fill it accordingly, however proceed with caution when driving as the 2000 and 2001 has the dreaded 0331 head, if you haven't replaced it yet it should definitely be something you look into as it seems as though you have overheated more than once and a cracked head could certainly be in your future.

As others have noted - new cap, good flush and check for cracked head. Also if your temp gauge is flaky and the fan comes on at 210, I'd replace the Coolant temp sensor (the one in the t-stat housing) with a quality replacement. The e-fan shouldn't come on until 220-ish OR if you're running the A/C.
