Default 2000 jeep xj (cherokee) ball joint problem

My jeep xj just got new tires and we noticed the passanger side lower ball joint was bad. A few days later we went to replace the upper and lower, and the lower fell out. We think the hole is stretched out, because the new one wouldn't go in tight and stay in. The top one is pressed in good like it should be. But for now we have a loose ball joint just waiting to fall out in my jeep so I'm trying to avoid driving it. My question is, is their any way to fix this? I wanna do the job right. It's a 2000 cherokee sport. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

The simplest repair would be to swap in another axle. Once the holes are walloed out the inner C is basically useless.

You could have the inner C, but a junkyard axle would definitely be cheaper.

Now if you can weld and want to spend some time working on it yourself....replace the inner c.

Well there's a ton of info out there but I'll cut through some of the clutter for ya.

Any Non-Vacuum Disconnect Axle (91+) will be a direct bolt in.

2000 and 2001 are low pinion (LP axles and therefore use a standard rotation ring and pinion. The earlier axles are high pinion (HP). HP use reverse cut gears and are stronger than the LP.

All you really need to do is make sure that the axle you procure has the same gear ratio as your current axle.

Your current shafts are interchangable with all XJ, ZJ, TJ, LJ Dana 30 axles. So if you do end up with a 94 or older D30, re-use your shafts. Your u-joints are larger.

Wow.. thanks man. So the best situation would be a 91-94 d30 right?

No, 95-99.
That way you'll have a complete set of spare shafts and hubs to carry as trail spares.

no the best thing to look for is a 95-99 dana 30. guarantees the larger shafts.
with the 91-94 dana 30 it is certain jeep configuration that have the bigger shafts.
my 89 frontend is an oddball for that year and is nondisconect and had 297 shafts.
