I washed the engine, which is an inline 6, 4.0. After re aligning the camshaft position sensor and clearing out codes it starts and warms up for 15 minutes and then dies like it was turned off. Basically warms up then dies.

 

Could be anything. Did it do this before you washed the engine?

 

It ran great till I washed it. It wouldn't stay running right after I washed it and followed some of the threads on here to get me to this point. I thought I had fixed it when it started up and stayed running. I took it for a drive and it died again. It will start up just fine but when it gets warm it dies. I can start it again but it will only run a few minutes then die.
Any thoughts?

 

mine did the same exact thing. all i did was clean my battery connections and it ran fine after that.

 

Still having the same problem, starts, warms up, dies. Bought a code scanner, hooked it up and it says no error codes. Had scanner doing live data stream when it died and still it said no error codes. Any more ideas?

 

Check your O2 sensors and throttle body sensor.

 

Thats strange. Not trying to be a smart *** but there isnt a throttle body sensor, i think he probably means idle air control sensor. If your scanner will display pending codes i would look there. And since it displays live data i would see if any sensor had a drastic change in voltage when it dies.

By no means am i a master mechanic, just trying to help.

 

Thank you much for ideas!! My mechanic is worried that when we cleared the codes originally and the engine light went off we jumped the gun. He still believes the problem goes back to getting it wet. Tomorrow we are gonna try to figure out how to use the scanner in live data mode. No instructions came with it so we aren't very clear on all it can do. Anyone with any more thoughts would be appreciated.

 

There are two sensors on the throttle body, the throttle position sensor, the MAP sensor, and there is the idle air control motor. Once you figure out and fix the problem, don't wash your engine again. It does more harm than good.

This connection is by the camshaft position sensor. Metal bracket attached to a long bolt going into engine block. Anybody know what it is?

 

The little black box you are referring to is an engine temperature switch. They are mainly used to switch thenthe electric fan off and on. There is a second temperature sensor which is used for the display and ECM data. Typically if you are not having overheating issues the switch is operating as required.
