Default 2000 Cherokee Ignition lock

I have to change my ignition lock since my children ( 2 boys, 7 and 4) decided to play with the keys and forget where they put them . Question is what is the difference between Keys, and coded keys?

Be nice, I'm starting to get the jeep smarts a little but some things still baffle me.

What year xj? if it's a 2000 like your profile says, your local dealer should be able to cut you a new key by VIN number....we do it at work all the time for people.

If your jeep has SKIM there is a chip in the key that gets programed to the vehicle to allow it to start. you could call this a "coded" key. By VIN number the dealer will be able to tell you if you have SKIM also.
