Default 2000 Cherokee Diesel Advice

Hi all,

I used to have a 1997 4.0 XJ in Australia a few years back and loved the thing - apart from overheating constantly. I've now moved to Norway and due to the price of petrol or whatever other reason they mainly only have the 2.5 turbo diesel options.

There is a nice 2000 TD with 235,000km on the clock. I asked if it's had it's headers rebuilt as I know that's a common issue with these but he came back with a vague answer saying all service work has been done and it's running well. Guess we'll have to go see.

The price is fairly low compared to others on the market, so I can budget for a header rebuild but would like to know what signs to look for when I go take a look.

I'd also like to know rough ideas on costs to replace the headers/engine rebuild - though I know I can add another 50%+ onto that being that it's Norway.

Any advice appreciated. I know the 4.0's were 'bullet proof' in comparison and I always loved putting my foot down in the 1997 I had. Are there any folks here who converted a diesel into a petrol or is it more of a pain than it's worth?

Thanks

By headers, I assume you mean head gaskets/head?

If so, not sure if there are many machine shops in Norway but you could pull the heads off and have them rebuilt yourself - doesnt look that difficult from a quick google search (if you are handy with a wrench). having a spare vehicle you can use so you have ample time also makes it easier.

I would call around and ask where mechanics get their engines/heads machined and rebuilt and get a quote. It is a fairly common motor for Europe;

Then call and ask what a head removal and replacement would cost from a mechanic and decide if you want to DIY or not. If you decide to DIY - get a Haynes or Chrysler Factory Service Manual and start turning bolts.

Engine rebuild I have no idea how much it would run in Norway - in the US these engines are pretty rare and it doesn't look like a "crate" motor is readily available, meaning a rebuild would be the only way. Not a bad option but assume $3000 USD at least including labor, possibly more

The TD gets better fuel economy but the 4.0 has more power and is more reliable, easier and cheaper to service, and can cruise at a much higher speed on the highway

Thanks for the quick response, it's definitely food for thought. We already have a Suzuki Vitara which so far has been reliable as. Not quite as "fun" but sensible and practical.

I think unless I can get a 4.0 again I might choose to stay away from the diesels. I'd really love one of the old wagoneers or chiefs as they have loads of character, though then we're getting into the classics.

I'll have a look around anyway to see what the options are. I just don't want to buy an old Jeep to save money and then end up with a lemon that I need to drop $$ in.
