(2) XJ Cherokees Seatbelts & not catching/ restraining
So I replaced a 2001 4.0L Silver Jeep Cherokee Sport XJ that I totaled. Seat belt saved my life & I still have to drive the hiway where it happend.
Bought a 60th Aniversary [ Jeep Chrokee XJ 4.0L Sport ] all 4 of the seatbelts won't catch/ restrain. I made an appointment to see an Autobody shop and they found that all the seat belts are doing this.
Only thing different between the 2 Silver 2001 XJ's is the T Case and the tire size.
Anyone know why all 4 aren't functioning properly?
I've tried to slam on the brakes method, but the crash was pretty gnarly and I'm almost back to work 7 months later so I can't get another concussion among other things.
[ I'd post a pic of what I wrecked and how the seatbelt saved me but I'm not sure if people want to see it. ]
I thought I saw no evidence of an airbag deployment in the new to me replace ment one on the VIN report.
FWIW I've owned 1 MJ & 2 XJ's with 4 engines between them over the course of 20 years and 175 k miles on driving them. As far North as Revelstoke, as far South as Santa Cruz, as far East as Idaho, as far West as Hurricane Ridge, Washington.
I tried to buy the salvage wreck back but all the medical things got in the way of that. The wreck sold for $1100 and I wanted it for the new vehicle - had I known, I would have found a way to remove the seat belts at the tow yard and saved them for the new rig. Old crashed XJ was 25k miles ahead of the new to me XJ.
I'm already thinking the inertia keys have dog hair on them or glue from the headliner or debris from a detail job prior my buying it?

Dont muck about, obtain 4 used ones from a rusted (not smashed) wreck
Its a ***** getting them out
a T55 Torx is loctite right in there, and underbody body schutz makes drawing the thread through even more difficult
heat is 100% needed, which aint much fun with carpets and plastic
New ones are probably available. I would buy a new Drivers belt in particular, as they get used so much more often, and can get worn or even frayed

Yes to new ones! Would be nice if they are available.
Hopefully soon I will have the time to take these apart & inspect them.
I'm already wondering if its dog hair, or auto upostry cleaner, or rust on the inertia key, if that's the name for it?

Not sure how similar they are to my 96. But mine did this after sitting for a year while rebuilding the floors. I read about the internal pendulum needing to be freed. So I turned it all which ways, while shaking and smacking it. Testing it to lock it, then freeing it again until it no longer stuck. And after awhile they all did free up. Driving it all winter they did fine.
If all 4 are not working, then blowing them out with compressed air, and some sort of fabric cleaner may work
I have one out of my mates bus to work out why they fail, I will cut it open if needed
As I said, if in any doubt, you must replace them for safety
Even if I could not obtain a good used, or new OEM style, it is usually possible to fit generic belts in several styles ( to accommodate stalk length)
If only you are in it, the drivers one is critical
Failed or damaged belts is a fail in our annual MOT inspection
I would Google "Jeep Cherokee XJ seat belts" and see what comes up
( I just did this for you, heaps, including Youtube on fixing them,,and this)

I vigorously exercised & tested the PS Rear seatbelt. Blew it out w/ air duster & vacuumed it. It works now. I'm beginning to think vehicle sat w/ condensation in it under a tree for various reasons. I'm also awaiting to hear back from an auto body shop that helped me on the previous XJ that I wrecked. If somewhere there are new OEM I want those in after the other functioning one saving me in the wreck.

Update : Still working on a solution. At one point I thought I had a NOS OEM coming in the mail [ turned out to be non viable ], had my Jeep Auto Body guy go to a junk yard [ only WJ belts available ], I'm still searching.
Also had a Mishimoto Radiator I bought from AMZ did not fit properly. Have to get ready for the heat coming & don't want the head to fail & have to rebuild. The rebuild has to wait for awhile - seat belts 1st. It can get really hot where I live and cold but only 2 months in summer & 2 in winter.
I'm not ghosting this thread or giving up. Just a lot of things I'm working on and since I have other vehicles this Jeep get's moved lower in priority at times. I know I'm not giving up and will be back with a solution when I find one. Once I can make the the Quadratec Link work I will email that to my auto body guy.
