Default 2.5 TD Vm Engine. Power Loss

ok just joined the forum, so hopefully you guys might be able to help.

Ok will start from the beginning

got a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 2.5TD fitted with a VM Engine.

car started slowly losing water and then later started to build pressure in the coolant bottle and also at the same time lost power. on full throttle would stick at 65mph max and take forever to get there. found heads 3&4 was cracked causing the issue with water building pressure
so found two new heads other remaining heads was pressure tested and all ok. all fitted back on to engine with new gasket set.
started the jeep for the first time for test drive all was ok till about 0.5 mile away and the power loss was back, water flowing around system lovely and staying at mid way on temp gauge.
weirdly the engine revs freely when parked, and idles as it should.
it feels like there is no turbo power. but the hoses expand when engine is revved.

Checked:
No fault codes
Vac Lines
Fuel Lines
Injectors
Fuel Filter - alot of sludge at bottom of filter.
Air Leaks
Turbo
Turbo Pipework
Maf Sensor - found alot of gunk on sensor cleaned and replaced but no different.

Changed fuel injector number 1 as heard this can cause limp mode. but replaced and no different also if i unplug it while running it then cause a knocking noise.

i feel it maybe the maf/map sensor but dont want to waste anymore money on it. is there a way of testing it before ordering a sensor? unplugging the sensor has no effect either

my mate seems to think its fuel pump timing, but how can this all of sudden just jump out of timing?

Hope someone can help

Thankyou

Check the fuel pressure. Seems like you've ruled out the air, but if it wasn't getting enough air, it would bellow out black smoke. If it was a matter of fuel timing I'd suspect it would run like **** instead of just be down on power. Possible clogged injectors if your fuel filter was that bad.
Search Google for maf test procedures.

Hello, sorry I know this thread is ages old but I have the same issue with mine, have fitted a brand new injector 1 as it was dead but there is no faults showing. Taking about 30 seconds to get to 50mph.

Did you find a cause to your issue..

Thank you in advance,

Adam

Honestly, you should try one of the Australian XJ forums. This is typically overwhelmed by US XJ enthusiasts, who don't know beans about the VM TDI. Good luck!
