So as the title states, how much work would it be to put a factory tire carrier on a 98? I found one for sale new in box for cheap and I’m wondering if I should bother with it. Or maybe even buy it anyway and ten years from now it might be worth a lot more. Lol
Which one? Regardless I think you should buy it an flip it. To me. I have the one that does not attach to the rear quarter. Used. Not sure if I am going to use it but when I found it on Craigslist figured I should snap it up. I am missing pieces. But the support pieces that would be behind things. Figure some flat stock steel will take care of that.
People have done it. I don't have a write up or anything but have saved shots of them on a Jeep.
So upon further research it’s a valley industries brand. It’s not either of the factory style. It looks like it mounts to the bumper and between the gate and taillight. So maybe it won’t work on 97 up. There’s a reason it’s listed as fitting 84-96 Cherokee/wagoneer.
Not sure if $125 is actually that cheap. I saw some older posts of people selling them in very used conditions for $75.

That was on Craigslist in one of the NY sections wasn't it? I saw that awhile back. Kinda remember the asking price being $150. But it could have been $125. I remember researching it and deciding it was not something I really wanted. Plus I think it was a good drive for me.
Yes sir. $125. I found a thread from 2015 where someone sold one instead of trying to make it fit. Something about the shape of the bumpers being different.but it also mounts around the taillights. Those and the gates are quite different from one to the other so I can’t imagine it would be easy to fit. I have an old hitch mount bike carrier I’m thinking of turning into a tire carrier instead. Curt sells one for $80 but it doesn’t pivot down so the gate can be opened. I’ll have to keep my eye out for one of the factory ones I guess

Even the factory one I have, the picture of the one on the dirt is what I picked up awhile back for $100, will not just bolt on to the bumper perfectly. At least that is what I think because I believe the bumpers on '96 down are shaped a little differently then '97 and up. It won't conform perfectly. Still doesn't mean it can't be done. Also the difference in bumper caps means that the one side as to be trimmed. I grabbed the one I had on the spur of the moment. Like I said it was $100 and literally 5 minutes from home. Even if I don't end up using it I could not let it slip through my fingers. Never see them around here. Some guys post that they always see them in the boneyard and can grab them for $25. I just never see the more optioned XJ's in the couple boneyards that I frequent.
