Default 1998 XJ grinds in reverse

So I’m a bit new to XJ’s and cars in general but I recently noticed that on my newly purchased automatic 1998 Cherokee Sport it makes an uncomfortable grinding sound when it is in reverse. It kinda sounds like it isn’t quite in gear or something. It’s fine in reverse when I just barely touch the gas or not at all, but when I press the gas a bit more it makes the sound. It kinda sounds like it’s coming from front/below the drivers seat but I can’tg tell for sure. Everything else works great. Someone help?!? I’m hoping it isn’t the transmission as it was replaced a couple years ago. Also the Jeep comes with the stock Up Country Package so it has a LSD. Could that be the problem? Any input would be helpful! Thanks!

Did you have a look at the fluid levels and condition?
include transmission, transfer case and differentials

I checked the transmission fluid and that looked good. Excuse the newbie question but how do you check the transfer case and differential fluid levels?

On the diff's you will see a filler plug. There is only one plug. Remove and get one of those Allen keys that has a 90 degree angle in there to measure the level. Should be just below the plug level.

The TC has two, one at the top would be the filler hole. Don't use the bottom one, that's the drain plug. Same procedure. Google for pics if needed.

If you don't get the level on the Allan key, it means it's probably low.
You can top up for a quick check for now with the correct fluid.

Pm: Can't recall the size of the hole, buy you might get a finger through there to feel for the level. Or get someone with small fingers to do this 😉

Tip - If you decide to do a fluid change in the xfer case, take the upper fill plug out first. Plenty of posts around here where people got the drain plug out and then couldn't get the fill plug out. :}
