Currently helping my sister and dad rebuild the engine and reinstall it into her 1998 XJ Sport (4.0 I6, AW4). Unfortunately, I wasn't around for when this thing got taken apart so all I have is an album of photos and some (thankfully) labeled bags of bolts and nuts.
Does anyone know if a bolt goes into the torque converter cover at the 12 o'clock position (when looking at the engine from the rear?) Seems like there's a cutaway at the 12 o'clock position in the transmission bellhousing for some sort of bolt head, but I cannot find it in the diagram or any clear photos anywhere. In the photo I have a bolt here -- but turns out it's not the right thread size (it's different than the bolts at ~11 and 1 (the two E12s)) and I can't seem to find a fitting bolt in our bags. Wondering if it just didn't exist.
My best guess is that it never existed -- but just seems strange to me to have a hole in the cover with a corresponding threaded hole in the block and recess in the bell housing. I don't see any bolt here in the parts diagram.
My only concern is rattling or something but, I have a feeling the cover gets sandwiched pretty well between the trans and engine. In that case -- can anyone just satisfy my curiosity regarding what the threaded hole in the block is for at the 12 o'clock position?
No just the ones to the left and right...the infamous torx bolts. Do not re-use them. Get a pair of grade 8 bolts of the same length and size. It will make your life easier in the future. I can't remember the size, its been several years since i had the motor out and i had to get in there with a cutting wheel because the torx heads stripped.
